This bathroom had reached the point most eventually do. Nothing was broken exactly, but nothing worked either — the vanity was original, the tile was original, and the layout was drawn for a different decade.
So we took it apart. Everything came out, down to the studs and the subfloor. That is the honest way to start when the finishes are that old: you find out what you are actually working with before you commit to a plan, rather than discovering it halfway through.
From there it was a straight rebuild. New rough plumbing and a new shower valve, waterproofing on the pan and the walls, then porcelain tile running floor to ceiling with a mosaic niche set into the shower wall. A double vanity went in where the single had been, with new mirrors, lighting and trim to finish it.
Three weeks from the first swing to the last piece of trim.
